Nanaimo Flying Club May 2013

It seems summer… is finally here!  May starts off with a bang at the NFC.

Another excellent 1st Saturday of the Month NFC Brunch, put on courtesy of Ray & Marilyn Bowerman. It was very well attended with many visitors flying in from Victoria, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Pitt Meadows, Langley and more. The Air Cadets were operational that weekend, and the NFC clubhouse was a busy, busy place. Nice to see!

The same Saturday (May 4th, 3013) also had NFC’s Gavin Chester organising a fly-out to Vargas Island.

Departures were slotted after all our incoming visiting pilots had a chance to fuel up both body and airplanes.

The weather was perfect for a flight out to the west coast. Six aircraft made ready to head out for an excursion and subsequent beach landing at long time popular Alhouse Bay located on Vargas Island, nearby Tofino.

Coming up, is a mid-month breakkie at the clubhouse Wednesday, May 15th starting at 9am. It’s a “just because” breakfast, all members & guests are welcome to join-in, shoot the breeze and if it’s a nice day out, perhaps some flying will take place afterwards.

The 99’s Poker Run is on the following Saturday (May 18th) and one of the poker-run stops is at the NFC. If you’re not particiupating in the Poker Run, then c’mon out to the clubhouse & check out the activity. There will be incoming aircraft all morning and early afternoon.

An Air Cadets BBQ is also happening at the NFC on that same Saturday. The BBQ’s will be fired up at 12:00 with food units sizzling until 14:00.

Sunday May 19th check out Jim Spencer, Guest Speaker at the NFC’s monthly General Meeting. the GM starts at 09:30 with most folks arriving a bit early for some pre-meeting hangar flying. A “by donation” brunch follows the meeting and after that check out Casara’s Jim Spencer, who is Mays NFC Guest Speaker!

Then, on the following Sunday, (May 26th) there’s a double treat in the works for the NFC. Gavin Chester is leading a beach assault on not one, but two island destinations. A pre-flight briefing (09:00) is being held at the NFC clubhouse, and departures slated to begin at 09:30.

The first destination is local favourite, Vargas Island. After a beach BBQ Breakfast, some or all of the gang will head out to check Calvin Falls located on Nootka Island. Check out details of this excursion here. Have question or two? Give Andrea a call: 713-6312

Lots & lots happening locally this month, Abbotsford, Sechelt, Delta, Quesnel, Penticton, Prince George, Creston, Cache Creek, indeed, all have fly-ins this month. Check out the NFC calendar page for more details.

As for last month… the NFC grew just a little bit stronger again. Please welcome our new members: Wolfgang Carolsfeld, Wayne Copeland, Ryan Evans and Bjorn Kjaer!

Last but not least, the NFC now has a club owned C-172 available for all NFC Membership as a recreational use rental. Want to rent it? Join the NFC, pay your share and go FLYING with the NFC’s economical ride! Check out the NFC rental pages.
